Post Need help w/ steam
Hey, I'm about to download a new game on Steam, but since my download limit sucks big black hairy C*CK, I'll have to download it at school via my laptop. Is there a way to transfer the files from the laptop to the desktop like it's possible with counter-strike or any valve games?

You could download the game, and then transfer the major files, starting with its root folder and any other files that appear in the SteamApps folder that go with it. Then, on your desktop, re-download the game.

OK nvm, I found the folder "common" (found = took the time to see what's in it) and found out that there was all the games downloaded that are non-valve. But if I just copy paste the folders, will it work the same?

If you copy and paste the folders, all you need to do is repair the game I think. It might be different for certain types of game but I used to save my CSS installation on one folder and then delete it to fool someone that I wasn't playing by uninstalling it and then pasting it back when I wanted to play and I just had to click 'download' and then it'd download whatever was necessary to register the game and that was it.

you also need to transfer over any .gcf/.ncf from that game that is in your steamapps folder. Pretty sure that is where all the content comes from.

Steam has an option to backup a game

Steam has an option to restore from a backup.

It didn't work when I tried to back up over 50GB of games, but it might work for a single game.

.

That's what I used to do with Counter Strike Source when I lived in Germany and had a low-tier DSL connection. When I redid my computers I would back up CS through steam to get a folder where I would just backup to a drive or burn to a CD than when I finished installing windows and was installing drivers and software and what not I could just run the backup and save myself hours of waiting for it to download.
