So I have been consistently telling the execs for the last 3 years that the project I am peripherally dependant on is completely FUBAR. This thing carries an annual budget of $80M, and we have yet to deply a single customer for it. It has been running for 5 years at that rate and we are now going on the 6th...which means that we have so far poured almost a half a billion dollars down the hole.

Last year I architected and ran the implementation of a massively scalable endpoint simulation paltform so they could test the piece of junk and last month we brought the thing to its knees with one PC simulating 5K network endpoints. The simulator was handling the entire data load that the management server was generating using a single core processor with only 2 GB RAM, while the management server was on a dual proc quad core with 16GB of RAM and it was falling over on its ass.

Funny thing is we built the simulator with 2 guys in a little over 8 months and it basically does everything the management server does but from the agent perspective. So I told my 3rd line last Thursday if I had 2 more guys on the team I could extend the simulator base to handle the server side of the management workflows and replace the hunk of junk that does not work within 6 months.

Needless to say this has caused a not so small shitstorm across the org, but it looks like the execs are gonna go for it. I am about to replace $480M product with something that cost about $750K to build...absolutely unbelievable, lol.

lol -- so at this one company I worked for, we designed and built a machine for like 10k that did more than some COTS unit that cost ~15 times as much -- we saved the company like > 100k easy -- you know what we got as a thanks?

Sounds to me like the story of corporate America, not that I'd personally know. All the greats are under-appreciated.

I'm on an advisory board at mine and one of my sticking points is that if any one of us can show the company savings of $100k or more over a given year, we are entitled to 1 or 2% of that savings as a bonus.

One of my ideas should eventually save the company 1mil in a year, i'm hoping the policy is in place by then :)

Meeting with the CTO for Systems Management tomorrow...if I get his blessing the project is green lighted. I am pretty confident he will support it since the investment is low and there is no real risk if it does not work out.
