Hai, I bought a laptop last summer, an Acer Aspire 5536-5122 with Vista. kinda like it, but the big problem i got right now is that my dvd player isnt working at all... it can read any cd, but no dvds anymore even if it was working a couple of months ago. now it just doesnt detect any dvd... i tried updating it but it still doesn't work... i read some forums about it too but didnt find any decent yet easy solutions for a noob like me...
now i know some of you are real beasts in computers, so i was wondering if you guys had any solutions for me, the warranty is over, so i cant call those bitches to ask for a new cd/dvd player, and i don't really want to spend money on anything right now..
here are the specs: - AMD Athlon 64 x2 processor QL-64 - up to 1408 MB ATI radeon HD 3200 Graphics Hyper memory - 3 gb ddr2 - 250 gb hdd - DVD-Super multi DL - Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/draft-n wi an
(i dont understand half of what it shows so i figured i should just copy/paste everthing... thanks for your help)

You'll most likely have to replace your drive. My DVD player in my PC that I JUST bought doesn't read CD's just DVD's all of a sudden.

Re: Need help w/ my DVD player
You could always try to use a linux live-usb usb key and see if it's an OS related error. The most recent Ubuntu or Fedora would probably be fine.
Most likely it won't help, but it might be able to narrow down / confirm where the problem is.

Re: Need help w/ my DVD player
I had this problem after I got my house painted and there was a ton of dust from the popcorn ceiling removal...shit got everywhere no matter what we did. Turns out CD/DVD combo drives use different lenses to read each type of media. Could be that the lens for the DVD laser is dirty, which might explain why you can read CD's but not DVD's.
Try a lens cleaner disk and see if that works.

Like I said, I had the same problem...CD's worked fine but DVD's could not be read. There are two lenses in the CD/DVD drive, one for CD and one for DVD. If one or the other lens is dirty then there will be a problem reading one type of media but not the other. You don't have to have alot of dust floating around for this to happen...lot's of things can cause a CD/DVD lens to get dirty. From the description of the problem I doubt that the issue is a hardware failure since the drive still works for CD's. And as far as I know Vista has had issues with CD/DVD drives becoming completely inaccessible but not just losing one type of media, so it's not likely software related.

Re: Need help w/ my DVD player
Good luck with Best Buy giving you a new laptop. I had my laptop for 4 months and the battery and port where you plug in the power cord went bad. So they had to send it off and took 3 weeks to get it back.

Most likely it won't help, but it might be able to narrow down / confirm where the problem is. Man I haven't used that type of trouble shooting for years, its a good thing to always try though.
