Post Hooker's Beer Tasting Adventures
Hi n00bs,

So as per Gman, I am steadily trying to become a beer nerd so eventually I can homebrew everything I want, as I want. As I was starting, I made a thread about what kinds of beers I should try. I found a solid base of our community knew a lot about what kinds of beers they like, and knew everything about them. I also found that mixed in with this solid base was a large group of our users that knew nothing about good beers. It is my goal in this thread, with the help of Gman and anyone else who wishes to help me, to relate my beer tasting adventures to those of you who like me had no idea what kind of beer to start out with. The reason I am doing this is because like most of you, I am new to beers so I will give you a raw, laymans approach to the beers.

I will update this thread bi-monthly. I will list the new beer that I am trying, I will describe the taste, aftertaste, cost, effect on my intestines, and other experiences which may be related to my drunkenness.

I ask anyone with a significant background in beer (Gman & corpse so far have proven that they do) to either post here, or pm me with a few types of beers that you seriously enjoy. As I get to them, I will post my thoughts on them.

I have some limitations however, as I have no car. I am located in Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh so I do have a subpar bus system. If you are going to list off a beer for me to try I request that you make sure that I can purchase it locally and be able to get back to my dorm with it. Two places that I know I can get to have their lists here:
    -http://www.micromatic.com/beer-distributor/pa/pittsburgh/craig-distributing-company-bdid-1429.html

So anyways, n00bs, ON WITH THE DRINKING!

Beer #1:
Dogfish Head: Midas Touch

Cost for a case: $60

Beer description: Dogfish Head describes this beer as somewhere between wine and mead, as it's got white grapes and honey mixed in with it.

What I thought: My god, as a first taste, I was like what the hell is this. I was used to shitty beers. This rocked my F*CKING pants off. I sniffed it first, and it barely even smells like beer. So I start drinking, it goes down very smooth and doesn't make my cringe, I actually enjoy it. It's got a slight bitterness to it at first, but when you stop drinking it for a minute and start talking to people with every breath you take you get a hint of the complexity of the beer. The aftertaste is the best part of this beer, by far. I drank one of these with dinner, I had some chicken and afterwards I just sat around and enjoyed the aftertaste. I then had another when the aftertaste faded after about 15 minutes. It tasted even better than the first one. The beer just gets better the further you get into them. I loved how it made my chicken taste different, in a good way. It was awesome.

There is nothing quite like this beer on the market. It's completely unique in it's taste, as it comes from a different era.

Side notes:
-This beer mixed with magic hat #9 make an interesting combination, I enjoyed the magic hat more after I had this.
-This beer is DOUBLE ABV OF REGULAR BEER

Adventures: I'll get to what I remember of them after I get into calculus in a minute.

Between wine and mead eh? This sounds like something I should definitely try.

It's technically not even a beer, per the Reinheitsgebot... but to hell with the Reinheitsgebot. It's a hybrid between beer, mead, and wine. It's made from a 2700-year-old recipe found in what is believed to have been King Midas' tomb.

Come down and visit me this weekend. I've got another beer I'm taste testing. I'd be happy to get you drunk. Maybe we could convince fomenta to join us.

F*CK, that shit sounds awesome. I'm not a big beer fan but the shit you just described (especially the cringelessness) is something I wanna try. Now that I got a job maybe I'll take a dip into this world. Looking forward to the next one.
