AMD used to be the king of gaming during the K6 and K6-2 days. The Opterons were awesome as well. Unfortunately, it's all ancient history.

yeah, my current and last processor are amd. and i'm really eyeing an ati gpu right now too.

ATI and Source don't work well together, sorry, but unless you want to be forced to play your game on low settings, you won't be able to see where you are going because the haze/fog will be ridiculous. Look it up on google.

Never noticed any haze or fog with my 5870 all settings on high and a hell of a lot better then my 9600 gt sli'ed

you must be running directx version 8.1 or 8.5 instead of 9.0 or 9.5

or you just don't realize it

it's worse and D2, and while you may think it's not that bad, you will be pissed when you can't see the guy in heaven raping your face. Dust 2 and inferno have similar things.
