Post Pets.
My dog died today, I've had her for all but the first 3 weeks of her life, today she was 11-and-a-half, and it's hard as hell to deal with. I'm sure a majority of people here have had pets, and I'm sure a lot of you have had to deal with losing one. However, I'm also sure that there are some of you who probably consider them "just animals." Bailey wasn't just an animal. She was a part of our family, she was a companion for me growing up, she's was like the baby of the family. Today I didn't lose a pet, but a family member. I know our family will fill the void and get another dog soon enough, but we'll never have another one like her. She never hurt a person, almost never growled at people when she wasn't playing, and if any of us were upset, she'd come and sit with her head in our laps until we felt better. I never really thought about it, but emotions are a pretty universal language. Writing this had made me realize that saying "she was" is a lot tougher than I thought it would be.

This picture is a few years old, and you can't see it but her left eye had no tear duct, so it kind of looked like she was always crying.

I'm not trying to bring everybody's mood down or seek condolences, I just want you guys to know that when it really comes down to it, you love your pets more than you think you do, so I implore to you to just take a second, pet them, give them a treat, just show them that you love them. If they're anything like Bailey, they'll understand the gesture.

Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_13 Looks like she was a good dog to be around. I know you weren't seeking condolences, but I'm sending it out because a good pet is not every pet.

Have you seen Marley and Me? That show turns grown men into bitches. I turned into a little snubbing girl at the end of that show. Anyways, watch it, what you were saying kinda reminds me of that movie.

I know how you feel Apok, I just put down my dog yesterday. I adopted mine from a rescue group after she had been abused for the first 2 years of her life. She spent the next 11 and half years with me just enjoying life and getting to play with my sisters dogs. This week her hip displacia got worse and she was wimpering in pain in her sleep so I couldn't take seeing her in such pain and made the painful decision to put her down. It's like you said, she was not just not a pet she was a part of the family and I will miss her greatly.

My pup chester the molester

He is a Norwegian ElkHound.

Sucks when a pet dies. I have had to put down a few in my day. My first dog I put down myself, it was rough. I was about 14 and she just got so old that she could no longer walk or control her bodily functions. Dad left it up to me and I decided to do it myself, last time I will ever do that if I can avoid it.

First: Sorry for your loss bro. I had a Welsh Corgi who we had to put down to some disease he had. I never liked Spencer even from day one. I was young (5 years old) and had no idea how to treat a pet. I remember sometimes kicking Spencer like he was a toy when i was only 7 years old. This last spring we had to put him down, and after all the years that we spent constantly growling and fighting each other, we finally got along because he didn't have the energy to fight back, and i felt too sorry for him to pick a fight. Spencer had been through every part of my life... My childhood, through the Cedar Fire (a devastating 2003 San Diego fire that took our house along with several other hundred) and many other life changing events. My dad was soo attached to Spencer he was in tears. He constantly missed the midnight walks, or even the occasional pee break in the wee hours of the morning. To help numb his broken heart we got a 3 month year old Welsh Corgi (I'll upload pics of both dogs in a few hours). We hid the present from him at a very good friends house until it was fathers day. That morning the look on my dads face when he saw the dog, was priceless. This time around I've learned my lesson and am greatly appreciating this dog. Amber (the new dog) is now 8 months old and quite abused i might add... Abused as in.. shes so god damn cute every family member wants to give her the tightest hug she will possibly allow before getting angry. But once again. I feel for you, and am sorry for your loss.

Second: Marley and Me is the greatest dog movie i've ever seen. Its so sad at the end. I was crying Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_32

I'm such a bitch when it comes to movies I'm gonna have to watch Marley and Me alone because I know I'm gonna be a big mess towards the end.

ACM and Reynolds, those are pretty heart-wrenching stories in all honesty. I was sort of the final-decision-maker when it came to what to do with Bailey and every fiber of my being wanted to say "No, maybe she'll get better, let's just wait." But when it came to it I couldn't see her in such pain. I knew I'd miss her, and I do even more than I thought I would, but it would have been selfish to make her endure that another day. I just didn't think I could bare to see her go. I couldn't imagine having to make that decision at 14.

Shit I'm 37 and I found it F*CKING brutal to have to decide to let her go. I went to the vets with her kind of feeling good that she would not be in pain but when I had to say goodbye it really tore me up. I was talking to Tay the day I had to put her down and she said to me, it's a sign of a good owner to realize when the dog is suffering and to know when to say goodbye instead of keeping them around for selfish reasons. That made me feel good about my decision and I hope it helps you too Apok&ACM, the right thing to do is sometimes the hardest thing to do!

Apok - srry to hear it. I am a dog lover. I've always had a dog around. When I was a kid I had a german shepard. Pepper was the best. I taught her to go for my friends on command. She would break off her chain and beat the shit out of the other dogs in the hood. Needless to say, we were not popular. I've had two dogs die of old age....15yrs. Its heartbreaking to lose them.

My latest is a golden doodle. Charlie is a 1.5 and loves to play. She loves to swim and if we don't watch her close she will jump off my boat.
