Well, it's my first weekend in India. I'm still alive and haven't puked my guts out, yet.

We haven't been able to get off the campus yet due to security concerns and lack of a local guide. Internet is still a big problem, but at least they seem to be working on it. Apparently my phone, which was suppose to be an international phone, doesn't work with the local sim cards. It works with my American sim card though, and yes, the phone is unlocked.

We have limited internet access via the company's work internet, but they block e-mail and social networking sites and can only be accessed using company computers. There's an internet cafe that I'm posting from, but it's rather expensive relative to the local prices. 125 rupees for 4.5 hours of access. To put that in perspective, a full meal can be had for about 40 rupees. It's about 50 rupees to 1 dollar, so I can't complain that much about prices.


TLDR?
Still no internet, still no phone, still alive.

I'll check back on this thread in 2 or three days. The net cafe is a bit of a bike ride from where I'm staying.

good luck bro that is still cheaper than the Thai internet cafe I think it was 300baht for a hr which is like 3-4 american dollars. But I just spent that money like it was going out of style its like monopoly money.

Looks like it's much cheaper now. 12 years ago I paid Rs 100 per hour for a 1 KB/s connection. Yahoomail used to load completely in about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, if you don't mind dialup, there should be several prepaid packages available (1 month unlimited etc.) and they should be pretty cheap by now.

To whoever asked, I'm in india as part of job training for Infosys.

Dialup isn't an option because
1. I don't own a modem
2. We've tried getting datacards for our laptops, but the signal doesn't reach the hostels. We are on the bottom floor at the bottom of a hill.

In more positive news, we might be getting a WiMax based connection on Sunday if nothing bad happens.
