Two HDD's that don't boot up
I've got 2 HDD's that won't start up. I don't have a tower to let you know. I have an IDE/SATA to USB cable to check these out on my laptop. I play CSS that way too with my other working HDD. One of my HDD's is 750 GB and the other is 250 GB. Everytime I power them on they make a clicking sound. I'm not in the mood to pay like $600-$1200 for each. It's ridiculous. I was wondering if anyone here knows how open them up, check them, and ultimately fix them or even be able to move the data to another HDD. They stopped working a while back so I dunno which has the more important data, but I know the 750 GB has a shitload of movies and shows (and probably games) I've downloaded and the 250 GB more than likely has my PSP games, save data, and other shit I'd like to have.

Re: Two HDD's that don't boot up
The answer to your question is: the second you open them, unless you're in a laboratory cleanroom, you've quadrupled the cost of recovering the data off of them. And yeah, I said cost. Because you're not going to be able to do it yourself if they don't spin up. If the data wasn't important enough to necessitate a backup, then it must not have been that important. ;-)

And by the way we do have a tech support forum

I see, I was just giving ya shit.
But on a serious note Miroku, I wouldn't go opening them up. Just take the loss.

Re: Two HDD's that don't boot up
If you're ready to say goodbye to them and want some strong (fun) magnets to play with, and some really loud metal discs to clank together for the hell of it, then take 'em apart. If you want the data, don't.

Re: Two HDD's that don't boot up
there is software you can use to recover data from disks that tend not to work. pretty much if you can get them to spin up then there is a chance you can recover the data. just finding someone with that software may be a bitch. i know i only have access to it through work. but it is possible to move the platters into a working har drive to improve your chances at recovery. i did it about 3 weeks ago. its a bitch and you cant touch the platters or else the data in that area is totally fucked. oh and you can use metal tools either to touch them. we had to use some kiddy plastic tools to drab the platters it was a bitch but kinda a cool process, but anyway this is what we used to direct us through the process http://www.instructables.com/id/Hard-Drive-Disassembly-Samsung-Drive/

Re: Two HDD's that don't boot up
Lol well I've never fucked with the inside of an HDD. I never boot off of them. My Lappy doesn't detect them when I plug em into it. I'd rather ship it to Falcon for that shit with an extra external to transfer it all, once I have the cash for it. Of course monies will be involved for the trouble ♥
Yeah, I just remembered it. Care to move it to tech support? Fail on my part.
