Do all your numbers match? Does it have an arsenal stamping, and if so which arsenal?


I have had a bunch of these come through my hands over the years. Its resale value is huge if you put a little work into them. I would buy them for $75 and refinish the stock clean the barrel and resell for $175. Great gun.


Plus with 7.62.54 you can really reach out and touch. Try shooting at bottles of water or melons at 100 yds. ITs pretty cool.

A great movie that showcases the Mosin Nagant is Enemy at the Gates. Its a great movie about russian snipers. IN fact I believe the nagant was the primary weapon for those nasty ol women snipers of russia. They even sell a few aftermarket supplies outside of the normal stripper clips. Aftermarket camo monty carlo stocks are great as the regular stocks are always a bit small.

Although it did have some nice {shooting} scenes.

They all match, 3138, they're on the barrel, the receiver, on the bottom of the magazine and on the bolt handle. It has 2 stamps, one is like an arrow in a triangle and the other is a clover leaf with the classic russian sickle and hammer in the middle. It has a three other markings that are either 1/2 rubbed off or rubbed through and I can't identify them. I know it's been refurbished, it has laser markings on the side from vermont. It does have a date: 1939. Oh, the bayonet that came with it doesn't have the same number on it as the rifle.

The arrow through the triangle means its from the Izhevsk arsenal. The faded stamping are most likely arsenal repair stamps. When a rifle needed service they would stamp the rifle showing what it had done, like a code of sorts. The Vermont stamping is the either the American state in which it was shipped to, or the company name. Not sure which exactly. If you ever see one without the laser etched marking they are worth more as they made it into the states before the trade agreement or they were smuggled in. Having a rifle that has all matching numbers is a huge plus, but having what you have (everything but the bayo) is awsome itself. My only advice is to make sure you clean very good after each outing. Shooting military surplus steel cased ammo is bad bad news. The primers are super corrosive. Some guys use windex (or another form of amonia) but I just stick with some hoppes (or your favorite gun lube) and a nylon brush.

With a rifle like that you could get involved in some postal shoots. There are some websites that have contests were you shoot on your own time and send in your targets for evaluation. I have done only one but it was fun. In fact, with all the gun owners here it may be a good idea. Set the distance at 100 yds with a mandatory online printable target and we could have some fun!

When I brought it home, the initial reaction of my wife was to get rid of it. Then I skinned it, gutted it and showed her the meat. Since it was still fairly fresh, we cut a few sections, cleaned it and ran it through some flour and put some seasoning on it. About 1 AM I ate me some diamondback rattlesnake and it was tasty as F*CK! Uhm, like chicken...yeah, except stringy.

I have the skin laying on a board right now, I'm gonna "redneck tan" it with some antifreeze.

Was yours caked in cosmoline when you got it? I know some of the Nagants never receive the nasty cosmoline bath. An SKS I bought a few years back had so much on it the I had to take it apart and bake it in the oven.
