Stop changing that oil so much...

It’s been a misconception for years that engine oil should be changed every 3000 miles, even though most auto manufacturers now recommend oil changes at 5,000, 7,000, or even 10,000 mile intervals under normal driving conditions.

Greatly improved oils, including synthetic oils, coupled with better engines mean longer spans between oil changes without harming an engine. The 3000 mile interval is a carryover from days when engines used single-grade, non-detergent oils.

I must admit I was a lemming, following the advice of my father in-law and did panic when I let my oil change get past the "3000" miles mark. But now I let it slide to between 5,000 and 10,000 and/or just before cross country road trips. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_19

Wait, I'm supposed to change my oil? I just wait until the oil light comes on. Then again, I hate my Ford Explorer. I wish that thing would just kill over and die.

I have been changing my oil every 6,000 forever.


My uncle bought a spanking new ford ranger in 1996. Never changed the oil once, only added oil when needed. It finally died in 2004 after he used it to plow snow and it didn't have a plow.

my first car when i bought it already had 300k miles on it... being it was my first car i didnt know the importance of changing the oil...

i cant remember how long after i bought the car did the car die on me on the road while driving

i heard a lot of noice the week before it died, sounded like the fan was hitting something or somethign was loose banging up against somethign

turns out it was my piston. a week later on the way home from a friends house my car made a loud bang and my car died instantly no chock. It was a standard car so i coast to the side of the road.

couldnt get the car to turn on ever again .... had to put it at an auction for 400$ :S

thats what taught me to change my oil :P

You are lucky you got that for it. I would of gave you $100 just to scrap the metal...

When I was 18, I was in the process of buying my first new truck. A 1997 Ranger. At the time, I had a 1886 Topaz that was 3 different shades of red. They had a deal that the minimum trade in value was $1200. When I pulled the car in to sign the papers, the thing died in the parking lot. I win.

I traded in a 89 Ranger and it was the same deal. Then engine ceased about a block away. My buddies got behind me with their pick-up and pushed that shit right into the parking lot. I asked if they were really going to sell my trade in and the salesmen stated that all vehicles with a blue book value of $2500 or less go for scrap metal.
