Post Re: The steam box
C'mon guys, read what I posted before! That picture had nothing to do with sales. It's not why I put it there. I put it there strictly for the statistic for how many people own a computer and play games in the US. We weren't talking about sales, or how old the avg. gamer was or none of that crap, it was just some extra useless info that had to come along with the one valuable piece of information that was relevant.

Acid, I know you didn't create the picture you posted, but I think the data used in that could have been a bit off. For example, it states NCAA 2011 as the best selling console game with just under 700,000 copies (data from July 2011 for a PS3 game). This is far off base, because MW3 outsold that by far. "Within 24 hours of going on sale, the game sold 6.5 million copies in the US and UK alone and grossed $400 million, making it the biggest entertainment launch of all time." (Wiki link w/ references) Also, "As of January 9, 2012, 66 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold worldwide." (Another Wiki link) Compare that to the number of current STEAM users today at 5.1 million. Link

Not trying to be a dick here, just trying to point out the market share that consoles have in the video game industry. STEAM has a lot of catching up to do. I know we are all partial to computer games, because we love them so much, but most of the world loves their consoles more. Simple toys for simple minded people...

Comparing the lifetime sales of the XBOX 360 to the single day logins for steam is no way an accurate comparison. A better comparison might be number of STEAM_ID's assigned to number of XBOX's sold. The most recently banned account on our server is STEAM_0:1:45605476. We can safely assume that there are at least 45,605,476 steam accounts created. The comparison in the picture was a PC exclusive vs a consoles exclusive which is a valid comparison. MW3 was released on all platforms.

Steam accounts are also free to make and with TF2 being a free game, you can just hop in a server and see what your ID is without paying a penny, so that number is a little high. Add that with people who got VAC banned and had to rebuy the game to play and a lot of accounts aren't worth counting.

There's another significant number that is added in that I can't stand and that is this facebook casual farmville, mafia whatever, Zynga gaming bullshit. That number is so large now that it can't be ignored and is thrown into PC gaming and balloons the number outrageously. It should be its own separate category even though I'm impatiently waiting for KartRider to come back out and it's going to be on facebook this time instead of a client.

The only expanded number on consoles are the number of people that had to rebuy because theirs broke after warranty.

Yeah, if you look at the 'type' of games played, the highest stakeholder is the casual crap the internet offers via facebook. That's not "gaming", that's just wasting time.

Of Course that's what they say... lets announce that we are putting out hardware and when. So Microsoft and Sony can over shadow Our Release. U will not get a definite, we have one, when and were it will be released until the system is 100% ready.
