 Re: Pistol for home defense
If you really want a home defense pistol and don't mind it being a revolver, you can always go with this beast: The Taurus Judge: .45/.410 http://www.taurususa.com/product-detail ... umbseries=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurus_JudgeThat Moss. J.I.C. is sweet, though. I might just get one mahself.

EnV wrote: What is the recoil like compared to the shoulder and your pistol grip? And seeing the barrel is shorter does that create more recoil or less? (gun noob please forgive me) Shorter barrel = less "backward" kick and more "upward" recoil. The Taurus Judge is garbage, simply because 410 buckshot is garbage. Birdshot won't kill a person, and the only 410 buckshot you can find is 3" -- too big to fit in the Judge unless you modify the shells. Even if you did modify them, you wouldn't get enough penetration to make them good home defense rounds, simply because the barrel is way too short for the shot to get any sort of decent velocity. .45LC is a decent home defense round, but again, you're looking at an extremely short, smooth-bore barrel. You lose a lot of potential velocity and accuracy with such a short and smooth-bore barrel. Yeah, really, any handgun can stop an intruder... but why buy a dual-purpose/dual-cartridge handgun if it isn't good at either of the two things it's designed to do (be a shotgun and a .45LC revolver).

The Remington is going to cost you a couple hundred bucks more than the Mossberg, but if you're trying to get a shotgun on the cheap, there's no reason to get the Remington over the Mossberg.
I've got a Mossberg 500c -- it's a 20gauge pump that has been pimped out with a pistol grip, shortened barrel, and an ammo-holder on the left side of it. Pretty baller, and one of the best home defense weapons one could have. 20ga won't overpenetrate as much as 12, and the recoil is a lot less (big factor when you take all of the recoil in the palm/wrist).
Only thing is, many years ago, I plugged the barrel with dirt while walking in a field, and when I fired it, the barrel split Elmer Fudd style. Haven't fired it since; I really need to pick up a new barrel for it. :( I would spend the extra $100 and get the Remington. I have had both models and have personally had more problems with the mossberg. Of course my problems are when I am hunting which is a totally different scenario than personal defense. Can't really say there is a model outside of the H&R that is a tried and true American made shotgun anymore, but Remington has been around the block a few times. I have used mine for a boat oar, walking stick in 3-4' muck while duck hunting and as a tool to hammer stuff in with. The mossberg I had came with really fun ejextion problems, forend slide problems and mossberg's well known easy rust factor. Not to say Remington's, or any other gun for that matter don't rust but it sure seemed the mossberg rusted a lot faster. Clean your guns kids. I wouldn't worry about over penetration with a 12 unless you live in a camper, or you are shooting slugs. Dirt + Barrel + Projectile = Banana barrel. Its happened to me once, On and old New England Single shot. I thought it would be cool to shoot dirt out of the barrel. No.

 Re: Pistol for home defense
The five seven is a sweet pistol BUT its going to run you at the very least (at least at our gun shops) $1000+. The ammo is generally hard to find. Ballistically you are going to have a ton of over penetration. The benelli Nova is the fastest pump shotgun on the market, or so I think. I have the Super Nova and use it for duck hunting. I had a standard nova a few years back that I won at a Ducks Unlimited banquet and I love it. Sold it a year or so later wish I wouldn't of. Never shot the third but I am sure it is no different than any other sawed off pistol grip shotty.

 Re: Pistol for home defense
that serbu looks sweet, but as gman said, the shorter it is, the more "up" recoil it's going to have. i think it could be a little hard to control.
