hey bro, from another drummer, you know as well as i do that were interchangeable. unless you got some sick stick tricks (say that 5 times fast), i wouldent say you could play better than anyone else.

i got interested a few years ago and have been ripping the shit out of my 14's ever since. been doing it as a hobby so i doubt im as wonderful of a butt-bugeler as you luff because your so wise and expirenced in the arts and sciences of music. lol i play because its fun luff, its not a critical life comitmitment for me.

i do it cause its fun too!i just wanna know as much as i possibly can so i can play whatever i want whenever i want.i listen to music all day,knowing shit tons of theory makes it easier to solo and makes me sound better :P the only reason i do it is cause its fun and i love it,but yes..it is a life commitment too :P

exactly, thats not gonna be me. ill play when the mood strikes me and thats about it. been thinking about putting in more practice, i know i can play a hell of a lot better than what i do now but my heart jsut isnt into it. anything that cuts into my love time is under harsh review

As a musician who works in clefs (notes), learning the modes, scales, intervals and chords is absolutely essential. If you don't know these things, you'll find it damned hard if not impossible to improvise in anything besides the extraordinarily overplayed minor pentatonic scale. Even with no knowledge in theory, you still have to know basic chords and the roots of chords. Since I taught myself all of this theory about 5 years ago, my playing has blossomed and I pride myself in being able to play a little of every genre of music.

When it comes to musicians who work in solely in time signatures (percussionists), knowledge of the time signatures is absolutely essential. Knowing the difference between 2/4 (cut time, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 7/8,9/8, etc is very very important because otherwise, how are you going to relate to someone that beat that you hear in your head? Just like all of the modes and scales, time signatures all have a "flavor" or "feel" or "emotion" assigned to them. 3/4 is that irish, waltz-esque sounding meter, 4/4 is the standard 4-count beat, 6/8 is a faster 3/4 as the 8 is on the bottom, meaning the 8th note gets the beat. 7/8 is a common progressive rock meter, as is 9/8. Time signatures/meters are actually quite easy. If you drummers learned these meters, you'd have no problem playing in any style. GET CREATIVE!

dude you're so F*CKING right, that's exactly all that i'm learning in my college courses, with a lot more but im not learning it the "more" things...

but yeah you gotta have an overall aknowledge to play anything. you can't (in any instruments, even drum than guitar or vibraphone or w.e) play an instrument without knowing the theory (now idk how everything is called in english though sorry)

im playing vibraphone, marimba, congas and jembe everyday, i couldn't play or improvise anything if i wouldnt know the theory... playing is alright, every1 can learn to play the drums tight and solid, but it wont be the same as a player that studied (even alone than in a school) how to read, sing, and play what's written on a part or what is played.

there is certainly some merit to knowing technique and scale structure, but most of the kids that i was in band with in high school cannot hold a candle to the way some of these crazies play nowadays on their el es dee and whatnot

not that drugs make or break anything ever, i just think thats its interesting

ask most of rock and metal musicians to play jazz/blues or a certain scale structure, ask some1 to improvise on a blue grass song, of course everything is improvised when you make songs, but nothin' is as original as a dude improvising on stage knowing exactly what to play AND also some1 that just can read a part and knows the techniques... it makes him much more wanted by other bands/more known because he actually can play everything... that's why its quite important...

of course drum isnt aimed at all by what i just typed right above, but if the drummer plays something else, like vibraphone (like me ), well now he'll have to know everything about music theory...

most of times musicians dont play only 1 instrument... try playing something else than drum if you're not doing it already, between the best drummer on earth, and a guy able to play like 10 different percussions, i think the most impressive 1 is the guy playing the percussions...
