Thermal paste it helps transfer the heat for the CPU to the heat sink. It's very wise to not reuse it once you took the heat sink off. You can get it at any local computer shop for like 10 bucks maybe more. Um to remove the old paste use some q-tips and rubbing alcohol. Once its all nice and shinny reapply the paste to the CPU and use a old laminated card to spread a thin even layer over the CPU and reapply the heat sink. I recommend arctic silver 5 its about the best thermal paste you can get.

i'm assuming by 'main cooling unit' and 'brass square' you mean your CPU and its fan/heat sink. that 'paste shit' is most likely thermal paste. it allows heat to flow off of the CPU into the heat sink and the fan sucks the heat off the heat sink. if it fell off, i would take a look at the fan/heat sink mounting bracket, cuz it sounds to me like it failed. those should never just fall off.

the thermal paste itself is cheap. a new cpu fan/heat sink is inexpensive too. hell, most aftermarket cpu fans come with thermal grease. or, like vision said, get arctic silver 5. it's the bees knees. but like i said, inspect your motherboard and look to see if the heat sink mounting bracket is broken. cuz if it is, you can either get an aftermarket cpu fan/heat sink that comes with its own bracketry, or get a new motherboard.

You guys are forgetting something serious. Power Supply. If he's going to replace the thermal paste he's going to have to get one that will be compatible with it.

I'm with Double on this, WTF on the power supply? His heat sink fan fell off his CPU, why does he have to replace the power supply? Seriously replace the fan, Artic, Thermaltake or Zalman are good solid makes but you might save some money with the Zalman. You only need to upgrade your power supply if he upgraded his CPU or video card.

I also agree with Double on the paste, too bad your not in Canada you can get for $7 up here.

You sir underestimate the advantages of a new power supply.
