Florida is quite close to the edge of a major tectonic plate.

True, but it is the trailing edge of the North American Plate that we are closest to, and it isn't very seismically active, the leading edges are...ie, California. This one originated in the middle of the Gulf, where there are no plate edges. They still don't know exactly why. Earth Burp?

Apparently last summer there was an earthquake that people up here in Toronto Canada felt... I was completely dumbfounded. We're at the middle of the North American plate. O_O

I too would like to feel one though, ^_^

Doesn't matter if your near a plate only, it's when you're near a fault (Ramapo (NY/NJ/PA), San Andreas (Ca) that you have to worry about. The Palisades (along the Hudson River) is a fault, but not an active one. The Ramapo is sometimes active, and of course the San Andreas. An earthquake can happen anytime, anywhere. Check out the USGS site, and you'll see hundreda of tremors everyday all over the planet.

I looked up some stuff, and there are very few faults in Florida, due to the makeup of the rock. In South Florida it's basalt, which is igneous, in the middle and overlaying it's limestone, which is sedimentary, and it's granite in the upper portion of the state. It's hard to find them with the limestone laying over top of everything.

I did find a link about the faults in the Gulf, however:

http://cigmat.cive.uh.edu/content/conf_ ... nt/13.html

There are actually hundreds of them, but they are not tectonic (plate) faults, but they can shift suddenly.

Interesting.

Pinkey, the thingy in ur avatar/signature is seriously hypnotizing. I spent like 30 minutes studying for test and then spent like 2 minutes staring at it spin and now i cant remember shitzzle of what i studied. !!

Earthquakes are pretty much fun as long as they stay under 2. If they get higher, then its dangerous.
