Verizon is currently installing some sort of broadband network in my area. I skimmed the flyer as I don't have much time before I go to work, but I was wondering exactly what this is. Apparently the technology is called Fiber-to-the Premises or FTTP. It apparently involves the use of fiber optic cables, although the flyer was very vague about that. The service is called Verizon FiOS and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this such as how it measures up to cable internet.

I got a package from Verizon a few weeks ago, but it was wireless so I said screw it. Don't think it was the same thing, but I notice they use the same terminology like, 'blazing speeds' and 'super-fast connection.' Just how fast is super-fast? Why can't they crunch out a few figures here so I can compare it, damn.

Is there a connection speed for dummies webpage, I don't really understand the up/downstream thing. The CD I got to install my wireless DSL says 54Mbps, I have no idea how that measures. I do good with graphs :?

that is mad fast i get 6mbps and i got comcast right now.

My mom was talking to an IT professional where she works. He said it blows the Comcast cable he used to have (and we currently have) out of the water. Plus, they are working on a television service to go with it. Yay!

She also said that we were getting it as soon as they finish installing it around here.

Comcast is better though, it seems like you don't bottleneck as bad. I just moved and had to switch to Charter now I'm at 3MbPs. Charter blows donkey nuts. My latency rate went up twenty after I moved. What a pile of shit company.

As for the Fiber Optics, if it comes my way I'll have it. I heard on a radio show that its up to 25 times faster than comcast or DSL. Sign me up!

Although the CD says 54Mbps, it still uses regular phone wire, I have no idea how the hell that works.

I'm running some Bellsouth Fast Access DSL at 3mbps right now. I could have Comcast at 8mbps but it always went out when it rained so my dad totally nixed it. Bellsouf totally needs to get their asses in gear and offer faster speeds here. I'm sick of those shitty comcast commercials.

yeah, anything faster than 1mb is good. I play CZ fine with normal ping on a .5MB download and even less upload speed.

It's an optical connection.. ie: light over the fiber. There is no "modem" in the conventional sense.

I've had 15/2 FIOS since February (I think thats now 20/5 too) I think and it's been great. I don't like PPPOE but I can tolerate it for now.

Your throughput will depend on the source and routes back to you, obviously. I can have about 8-10 different NNTP connections going with constant 2000kbyte/s speeds. That's pretty badass-- We're talking full DVDs in minutes. 8)

Cable companies are answering back with similar bandwidth which I've heard is comparable in price and quality so we'll see .. Verizon isn't deploying it as fast as cable cos are responding *shrug*

I define rain as any weather condition.

There is a difference between MBps and actually download speed. For example if you have 6mbps internet down (or up) you will download at about 750kbs per second, not 6 megabytes (or upload). Since nobody actaully measures stuff in bits, just divide whatever they tell you (30, 15, 6, 3, 1.5) by 8 and if will tell you approx. how fast you will download (usually its quite a bit less). So 30 = 3750kbs, 15 = 1875kbs, 6 = 750kbs, 3 = 375kbs, 1.5 = 187.5kbs. Anything above 1 is good if you are only gunna be doing 1 thing at a time, but if you have 6+ you can easily download stuff and play CS at the same time. At 30 you can pretty much download the internet. (not really, but yeah.)

And to answer the question, fiber optics has the potential to be much faster than DSL/Cable, but it doenst have to be. I don't know how much it costs but it assume its alot more. Any normal person does fine with 6mpbs.

I'm with Kitten. 3 MB from Bellsouth is the fastest thing around here, and it still sucks ass.

a fiber optic run is not better than cable the highest connection that you can get is a T1 connection. the only thing about fiber optic is that it has one main line and cable has more. there for you have a better connection.

We are talking home internet here. T1 is far too expensive.
