This is why government run programs are horrible
I got a letter in November from the IRS saying I misfiled my taxes in April, and I actually got back 195$ more than I should have, so I would need to repay that along with 6$ in interest since I had not yet paid it...(first I heard of this)...So I mailed the check on Jan 2nd when it was due.
I just got a letter on Friday from the IRS saying that they miscalculate the interest charge, and that I was due for a refund of 0.13$, but I would have to write requesting it since it was less than a dollar...
What amount of tax dollars did it take to figure out that 13 cents and the resulting corespondance. UGH that just makes me so angry.

Tell them to put it on your tab next time they try to take your money from you. This way, you'll be 13 cents less in-the-hole.

Re: This is why government run programs are horrible
regarding how government run programs are horrible... I guess this has been floating around the internet... http://www.tradersnarrative.com/america ... -2836.html"This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US Department of Agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the US naval observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school. After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal’s inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it’s valuables thanks to the local police department. I then log on to the internet which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects administration and post on freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how socialism in medicine is bad because the government can’t do anything right." ...

[Insert unoriginal chain letter here] ... Too much to even start with -- I could write essays on how most if not all of this would be accomplished (probably better and certainly cheaper) through entrepreneurship and capitalism -- they certainly would be established without the enormous government subsidies (or for most of these, government budgets) that these organizations require -- but to be honest Yeti, if you think this way, I'm sorry. The only people I know who actually think this was are hippies or college kids, who still love with their parents, have never had to pay real taxes (Income, Property, School District, Excise, Capital Gains, etc -- PS you realize even if the rate didn't increase, which it does, getting taxed for working minimum wage at a drive through effectively contributes nothing to the tax revenues -- so thinking "oh 15 bucks out of my paycheck is fine" is one thing when you make 300 / week), work in a real job or actually be productive. People don't have a right to health insurance. They just don't. Thoughts like these are what lead to our ever increasing entitlement expecting society. What's next? "People have a right to have a drive-through open 24 hours within 5 miles from them"? Also, as I've tried to explain before, the $1T quote is such a small percentage of the actual total, given: -- the 940B lowball estimate (including 10 years of income but only 6 years of expenses) -- the docfix, -- the aggregate cost to states for supporting the new medicare regulations, -- the cost to the US household due to tax increases -- the cost to the US consumer due to premium increases -- higher interest now that the government has taken over student loan financing and eliminated competition and competitive interest rates -- plus the cost of the thousands of medicaid advantage subscribers who now have their program benefits cut -- the INCREASED cost of prescription drugs of copays when the drug manufactures simply pass on the the newly established fees charged to them. -- the lost income from workers who are laid off because their company can't afford to provide them with healthcare -- etc, etc, etc. Now, to add to that, being projected and all, lets consider the track record that the Congress has on predicting the costs of programs like these, the two closest are Medicare and Medicaid. The Wall Street Journal writes: Start with Medicaid, the joint state-federal program for the poor. The House Ways and Means Committee estimated that its first-year costs would be $238 million. Instead it hit more than $1 billion, and costs have kept climbing.
Thanks in part to expansions promoted by California's Henry Waxman, a principal author of the current House bill, Medicaid now costs 37 times more than it did when it was launched—after adjusting for inflation. Its current cost is $251 billion, up 24.7% or $50 billion in fiscal 2009 alone, and that's before the health-care bill covers millions of new beneficiaries.
Medicare has a similar record. In 1965, Congressional budgeters said that it would cost $12 billion in 1990. Its actual cost that year was $90 billion. Whoops. The hospitalization program alone was supposed to cost $9 billion but wound up costing $67 billion. These aren't small forecasting errors. The rate of increase in Medicare spending has outpaced overall inflation in nearly every year (up 9.8% in 2009), so a program that began at $4 billion now costs $428 billion.
The Medicare program for renal disease was originally estimated in 1973 to cover 11,000 participants. Today it covers 395,000, at a cost of $22 billion. The 1988 Medicare home-care benefit was supposed to cost $4 billion by 1993, but the actual cost was $10 billion, because many more people participated than expected. This is nearly always the case with government programs because their entitlement nature—accepting everyone who meets the age or income limits—means there's no fixed annual budget. This quote too long for you? Medicaid's 1st year costs: Expected: 238M Actual: Greater than 1B Difference: 762M Error: Actual costs were almost 4 times what was expected.Medicare cost in 1990: Expected: 12B Actual: 90B Difference: 78B Error: Actual costs were more than 7 times what was expected. So to say that the bill will most likely be on budget is wrong, in fact, from history, we can expect it to cost anywhere from 4 to 7 Trillion. But even in the impossibly-rare circumstance that it came in on budget, it still would not consider the effect that the bill had on the rest of the economy or on the citizens of the United States. If you don't know what you're talking about, that's cool, many people don't care -- and to be honest I can't really blame them, its not like their say would have mattered -- but running around posting cartoons, regurgitating Keith Olberman just demonstrates that you don't understand what is going on.

Re: This is why government run programs are horrible
so if you had your way, every government run organization would be privately owned and operated and the hand full of people who would run all these companies would get rich off of the middle and lower classes from uncontrolled fees and charges. However, it would work if greed never existed, but alas, it does and at unfathomable and despicable levels. The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. The middle class would be eliminated. As of 2007, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 34.6% of all privately held wealth. and... http://www.directorship.com/u-s-banks-earning-38b/"U.S. banks are due to earn a record $38.5bn in fees for customer overdrafts this year..." typical right-wing ideology. so, to be honest fomenta, if you think this way, I'm sorry. you're smart, you probably have the skill set to become a wealthy individual. i don't know if i do, so i'd be screwed. am I saying that the government should control every aspect of life? no. hell no. among other things, i'm not for more strict gun control. but if every government-run alphabet soup administration was privately owned and operated, it would be cataclysmic. you wanna see another depression? that's the way to do it right there. I'm saying, the statement "government run programs are horrible" is unnecessarily absolute and blatantly untrue. Could they run more efficiently? sure. what couldn't? but then again, you'll probably just tell me i don't know what i'm talking about. heres menta's next post: "You're right, i am going to tell you that you don't know what you're talking about because you really don't know what you're talking a bo ut." whatever. I don't fundamentally care. I tend to take a george carlin'ist 'sit back and watch the entertainment' approach to this shit anyway. edit: o and, i don't work at F*CKING mcdonnalds and make alot more than minimum wage.

Quote: "People have a right to have a drive-through open 24 hours within 5 miles from them"? The sad part about is that...if I asked probably 100 regular people in the Midwest, I'd probably get a few yeas to that. also why are we having resurgence of political speak on the forums, I think we've learned this never turns out good.

Let the F*CKING strongest survive.

Re: This is why government run programs are horrible
the_yeti wrote: the hand full of people who would run all these companies would get rich off of the middle and lower classes That's sort of how capitalism works. Everyone is capable of starting a business and getting rich off of other people. That's just macroeconomics 101, there. the_yeti wrote: you probably have the skill set to become a wealthy individual. i don't know if i do, so i'd be screwed. Why not? You have the same opportunities to attend the same colleges/universities as everyone else in the world. It's about the amount of effort you put into it. If you don't put in the effort to obtain that skillset, that's your own damned fault. the_yeti wrote: if every government-run alphabet soup administration was privately owned and operated, it would be cataclysmic. you wanna see another depression? that's the way to do it right there. What's cataclysmic is undermining entire WORLD'S economy by destroying the value of the US Dollar. "Oh, hey! We have a 'problem'! Let's print more money!" I have a retirement account that's not going to be worth jack diddly shit by the time I retire because people keep printing up and spending money that we don't have. the_yeti wrote: I'm saying, the statement "government run programs are horrible" is unnecessarily absolute and blatantly untrue. Could they run more efficiently? sure. Government-run programs are horrible. The government is retarded. Have you or any of your friends/family ever been in the military? The US military is one of the worst financial sinkholes in the entire world. I'm not saying that funding the military is unnecessary -- I'm just making an example. The way their budgets work is that if they go under-budget, they lose that money the next year. That means that if they don't spend all of the money they have available, then they won't get as much the following year. Lots of (governmental) budgets work this way, and it's retarded. Oh, we came in $200M under budget. Let's waste that $200M on shit like hammers and toilet paper so we can be sure to have a little breathing room next year. They don't give it back -- they F*CKING waste it ordering shit and spending it on shit that they don't need, just so they can turn around and do the same thing the following year. That is NOT how you manage money. That is NOT how a financially-minded government should operate. The government is retarded. If you need any further proof, go to the F*CKING DMV.
