Buying a Minecraft Server
So my brother and I have been wanting to get a minecraft server for awhile (one where we can put the mods on it) I know we have gotten it from the server box before but I want to know if like it's hard to put mods on the server... are the industrial craft and buildcraft stuff compatable with the the new versions of minecraft, Etc. Is there anybody that can point me in the direction or answer some of these questions about how hard it would be to put one up.

Re: Buying a Minecraft Server
Thanks Virus I probably should have thought about youtubing it before I went here but I just wanted to see what some people had to say...
and No savage I don't think I'm better... it's just my bro as always only played minecraft with the mods and he doesn't want to not play it without the mods... What I really want to know is if like with minecraft being version 1.3 or even now 1.4 are any of the mods going to work still

Well yeah if you have the bandwidth as well as the extra machine to run a dedicated system then yes I agree with you run it for free from home. Though Amazon EC2 has a free tier which works just as well. http://aws.amazon.com/free/

Re: Buying a Minecraft Server
All you need is the server jar file. You can run it either with the gui or just run it via command prompt (I like command prompt better). To make sure your bro can get on, you'll just have to port forward your shit. It's not that hard to do, I've done it on my shitty ass laptop and have had several of the n00bs join. Also, this is how we started with an actual n00bfest server with acid putting a server up on his computer and port forwarding that. When you get all the mod stuff set up, I can help with port forwarding, or someone else can, depending on who is on at the time. Most routers have a page on it and it's rather self explanatory. Only thing YOU played was with mods, spoiled yourself too early and you wish to remain that way. lololol http://www.mod-buildcraft.com/2012/09/1 ... aft-1-3-2/http://www.industrial-craft.net/http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/700 ... -10092012/Those are APPARENTLY updated for 1.3.2. Don't hold me to that, but they look updated. Nothing is updated for 1.4 seeing as it's still in development with a MAJOR overhaul of some shit. RedPower is still behind at 1.2.5 probably because 1.3.2 might be hard to code, not 100% sure on that. EDIT: Side-note here. You can just play via LAN if you are on the same network, or could setup something with a LAN emulating program (not sure how to refer to it). If you aren't on the same network I would just port forward if you run off your own machine. It'd be easier than using those emulators.

Re: Buying a Minecraft Server
Yes I know I was spoiled too from the beginning and I has played vanilla mc and enjoyed it but I just feel the mods give more to it. Hell I still mine for shit even with quarries and I go an experiment with new types of power sources...
Anyways he has made a deal with me to buy a server for a year if I can use his netflix for a year,.. Good deal for me considering I'm paying 50 to his 80 so yeah I will be buying it soon. Def don't want red power except for the tables but yeah... I will just have to read up on this shit or if people want to help.

Re: Buying a Minecraft Server
Mods take forever for the maintainers to update because of the hackish nature of them until Mojang releases their official modding support thats under-development.
