did you download any emultors? mine did the same thing for a while, something with SP2 i guess, but now its better try doing a system restore, or even better go to the bios and check that its working.

If it is a physical drive go to Device Manager (right click My Computer, select properties, hardware tab, select Device Manager. Click on the + next to DVD/CD-ROM drives. If the device is there, or if it is not click on the pc with magnifying glass to scan for and P&P devices. If it drive is there have you tried using another CD? Did it work? If it doesn't show up in DM open up the machine and check your connections. Also just try doing a reboot. Sometimes Windoze goes braindead.

It takes what? Two hours to drive across jersey? You can probably help him no matter where he lives.

Depends on which part of Jersey. If I take Rt78 from Elizabeth out to Easton, Pa I can do it in 45min. Now if he's in Cape May(most southern part of NJ) with Jersey traffic that could take 3-4 hours. Yeah I know it takes an hour just to get to a strip mall in Tx. Hell I drove from DFW down to Corpus Christi because Continental fucked me on getting my connecting flight. That was a roadtrip and a half. At least I had a Mustang GT (Avis rocks)for a rental.

Dallas to Corpus is about an 8 hour trek.

"RESTORING ACCESS TO CD ROM'S
If you removed CD Burning software, or for some other mystical reason, can not longer access your CD ROM's, in most cases following registry keys needs to be deleted: Locate and delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters values under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

When you start regedit, always do a full export (after regedit starts click File, then Export). That way if you foul the registry you can at least recover.

couple things that this could be

1 loose wire
2 harmful software

if it's randomly apearing and dissapearing it's not truly corrupted
