The Case For SSD
http://www.corsair.com/blog/force-series-ssd-life-testingRecently invested in a 90GB Corsair Force 3 SATA III drive to boot with maintaining my SATA II Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM 320GB for storage. Interesting testing scenario done with 1st generation Force drive.

Re: The Case For SSD
I have a raided ssd boot drive, and frankly I am pretty meh about the whole ssd thing.
my computer doesn't reall boot any faster, and those buggers were expensive.

Re: The Case For SSD
I have been working with a police all in one computer system and it has an SSD and an I7 Sandy Bridge and the combo is awe inspiring.

Mine boots cold in like 12 seconds and that's counting me putting in my password and it loading my startup programs. Secondly, why the hell would you RAID SSD unless you had the $$ to splurge? Best combo atm is SSD for boot and programs (mine is only 90GB) and a decent HDD for storage. Make sure it's SATA III on both counts to get the most out of it.

I rarely reboot my computer, but when I do it boots in about 20 seconds. It does that with an ssd and it did that with caviar blacks. I expected instant boots with an ssd, maybe it was unrealistic, but the hype was bullshit.

Re: The Case For SSD
But WHAT KIND of SSD did you get, and WHEN? Because the quality and speed of SSD boots has been exponentially improving as each generation comes out.

Re: The Case For SSD
well my first were samsung SSDs that I don't remember much about, and my current are crucial M4s.
they benchmark well, but I just don't feel the difference like I assumed I would.
I am impressed with Ram drives, but my everyday PC only has 8 gigs of ram, and I probably won't upgrade it.

Re: The Case For SSD
Crucial M4's are bottom of the barrel as far as performance but top of the list when it comes to reliability, next to Intel. http://hothardware.com/Reviews/SATA-III-SSD-RoundUp-OCZ-Corsair-Patriot-Crucial/Attachment:

My ssd failed in 6 months. Not worth it. Technology needs far more testing and improvements.

wow, I am pretty shocked at how shitty the write speeds are compared. Thank god I never write to them much.

Re: The Case For SSD
prices aren't horrible, and some of the better older drives are cheaper than the gig per dollar norm that folks crave with ssds.
If you are broke, i wouldn't do it, it just doesn't make that much of a difference, relative to a high end mechanical drive. Though with the Thailand floods, mechanical hard drives are crazy expensive.

Though with the Thailand floods, mechanical hard drives are crazy expensive. I think it's okay to get as an accessory but not as a main drive, and reliability has gone up exponentially with the newer 3rd generation drives. If you want true reliability though I'd go with an Intel (newest one) because they took the SandForce controller and then did their own custom bug fixing for the firmware and therefore have it specialized to the point where bugs in the firmware that even SandForce hasn't ironed out have been remedied in the Intel drives. The drive I got is pretty darn good though, no complaints. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5508/intel-ssd-520-review-cherryville-brings-reliability-to-sandforce

Re: The Case For SSD
I actually have a first gen SSD rated for enterprise use, it's still going strong.
of course it's a 32 gig drive that cost like 1500 bucks when it came out.
What's your computer specs kwang? you a computer dork too?

What's your computer specs kwang? you a computer dork too? If I could afford it, my specs would probably be a lot better. Case: Antec Three HundredPSU: OCZ Mod X Stream-Pro 700wMOBO: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3CPU: AMD FX-6100GPU: Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6850 1gbRAM: Corsair Vengeance 8gb DDR3 1866mhzSSD: Corsair Force 3 90gb SATA IIIHDD: Seagate SATA II Barracuda 7200 320gb (from old PC)DVD: ASUS DRW-24B1ST (Black)KEYBOARD: Rosewill RK-9000REI just checked another review yesterday, and your SSD (Crucial M4) has much better steady-state performance than mine. Mine just happens to be faster from the get-go.

Re: The Case For SSD
That's a very respectable computer man, I have the exact same Mobo and ram, and I run radeon 6850s in crossfire. I snagged a caviar black 2tb before the hard drive market got so expensive. Plus I sold off some stuff to finance my most recent upgrades.
I am waiting for the refresh of the AMD fx line to pick one up, my current phenom 2 overclocks to 4.3 ghz and at that speed its plenty fast enough.
I actually use my Llano machine more than my gaming rig. A8 3850 running hybrid crossfire with a 6570. Its a great machine, and my mobo is mini-itx so it's pretty much a fourth of the size of the other computer and uses way less electricity.

Yah I like mini-itx but for gaming it's not quite as adaptable.

Re: The Case For SSD
ya it's a pretty limited platform, I just built it for an htpc and for my kids to F*CK around on.
My real computer costs me a ton to run 24/7, so this one saves me some cash in the long run, and it can play CSS and LFD2 fine. And I play those the most.
