Probably not your cable modem unless you also experience similar spikes / drops on the desktop.
Also you may see 81 Mbit/s to your router, but you most certainly won't see that outside of your LAN.
If you ping your router, what kind of latency do you see?
Get your router's IP address with:
(It's probably like 192.168.0.1)
Post these results.
Then ping it with:

Lastly, is your router password protected? WEP? WPA? Firmware updated?
I mean, at the end of the day, you might be able to improve it, but you'll always have random errors with wireless, regardless of how well you optimize.
