 ok computer gurus
emachin c2480 amd athlon 2400+,. when the power is pressed the fans start running and thats it. the light on the front is a amber color and is usually blue, i think. this is a buddy of mines comp, took a shit so his moto is buy another. I just replaced the mb thinking that was the prob but no go. Is it the processor? I have disconnected everything and hooked it all back up one by one trying to get it to at least post and nothing. IT doesnt beep or anything. IVe replaced the psu woth a 200w out of an old dell I had, it had a bestec in it that took a shit while I was fiddling with it and ive read some bad things about those. Im not trying to put alot of money in this thing as Im just gonna fix it for my g/f to use. Bought the mb on ebay for $40 and thinking about buying a cpu from there too, but I would like to know that that is what is wrong. Also could the old psu which was a 250w have taken a shit, which when it was in it would do the same thing as with this other psu. fans power up, I can feel the cpu heating up but nothing on the screen, no post or anything.

 Re: ok computer gurus
Onboard Graphics? If so, and you have replaced the mobo. I would say it sounds like the processor or possibly your RAM.

 Re: ok computer gurus
yeah it has onboard graphics, and I threw in a old card I had in the old mb and sill nothing, I would hear some beeps if it was the ram would I not? I dont have any spare ram to throw in. I googled it and someone said that if the processor heats up then it is working, not sure if I agree with that, as soon as I hit the power I can feel the processor instantly get hot.

 Re: ok computer gurus
Yeah if the cpu heat sink gets hot then its working.Try to reset the cmos on the mb.And if your running two sticks of ram try one stick at the time.Unplug all pci cards. Also it wont beep if the case doesn't have a speaker, and a lot of cheap computers have cut those out so look fer it.And if you tried a dell psu on a non dell mb you can probably go ahead and throw it all in the trash.Dell psu's only work on dell boards.I think the new dells are different but if its a 200 watt then no it wont work and likely fucked your shit up.

 Re: ok computer gurus
Or unplug the jumper and plug back in the opposite way, then put it back like it was.

 Re: ok computer gurus
A functioning systemboard with no memory installed should give you a beep code at startup. If it doesn't, then it's a CPU/systemboard problem. Try that to cut your potential causes in half.

 Re: ok computer gurus
yeah even with no memeory I get nothing of course like super siad I dont see a speaker anywhere , Im leaning towords the cpu, but it is heating up, i pulled the heatsink and fan and powered it up just for a sec and the cpu got so hot it put a blister on my finger. I have read that on emachines that things ususally go in pairs or even 3's, so maybe when the psu went it took the mb and cpu with it, or maybe just the cpu. I guess i could go ahead and just buy the psu (can get one on ebay for $20)

LAWLS popped a new cpu in I bought off ebay for $20 and it fired right up the only problem I have now is the psu, it actually takes the same kind of psu as the dell I had(super) but it has a diff plug setup
say this is the plug
oooooooooo oooooooooo
the other psu's I tried or like this and they would not work even a brand new one I bought
oooooo oo ooooooooo
the psu I need has an extra wire in the main plug that I need? What kind of psu is that?

 Re: ok computer gurus
are you talking about your mainboard plug? if so then look up the specs for the board online. or just look on the board itself -_-. it will tell you the kind of plug you need, most nowadays are 24 pin, older ones are usually 20 pin. newer PSUs usually have the extra 4 pins in an addon type setup so that you can use 20 or 24 pin. hope that helps.

 Re: ok computer gurus
yea, the dell psu plugs look the same as normal psu plugs, but the wiring is different, the new dell psu's are fine (usually), but since its a 200w psu, i assume its pretty old. i had a bunch of dell computers (new and old) that had the amber light on the front (they were blinking, is urs blinking or solid) and the problem was the psu. If u dont have a speaker in ur computer, which u probably dont, u can goto ebay or something like that and buy one. u could also try and call emachine. or goto there website, or google the problem, not trying to be a jerk tho, i have done this type of shit many times, and usually calling the company will help, even if its out of warrenty, soemtimes they will help u. http://cgi.ebay.com/Computer-Motherboar ... 286.c0.m14that is the part u need if u dont have a speaker. i went to ebay and searched motherboard speaker.

As you can see the cpu fixed the problem, as far as the psu I took the old one and the new one I bought to the local computer repair shop and the difference in them was that the new ond didnt have the -5v wire and the one that came out of the comp did have the -5v wire. Apparently the mb needs that wire to power on. But like I said in my previous post the new cpu fixed it. It is back up and running. Thanks for all you help
