for some reson norton has decided to stop working right after i used spy bot S&D to clear up come traking cookies. So i was wondaring how do i get rid of norton and the norton security center with out my comp freaking out.

yea the norton tool can help but when i used it last time my comp freaked out saying that norton security was missing or damage and wouldnt let me get past the loading screen for windows.

I for get how i uninstalled it a week ago cause i ran out of time with them.

Anti virus software breeds viruses.No self respecting gamer runs anti virus.

Yea cause you know that 8 gigs of ram isn't enough ram now a days to you might have to upgrade to a core i7 and get 12 gigs. But I still don't think that's enough right super to run a 10 meg program. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_04

From time to time i have had to fix my friends and relatives computers.I have never had to fix a virus infected computer that did not have some type anti virus software installed,most of the time it was norton.

I just cant see giving up the resources to run some crap that doesn't do its job.

Run barefoot and never click pop ups,if a pop up does come up then close it in the task bar.DO NOT JUST X IT OUT,unless its from a reputable company.If your doing stuff like downloading torrents then read the freaking comments.And i should not even have to tell you to be very cautious of all email.

If you do the above you can come back and thank me after 2-3 years of virus and worm free computing on the same install.


If you want to be a good un,just keep buying norton and get used to reinstalling windows.

In my opinion, an AV software should be considered the last line of defense. Even a smart computer user can have a dumb moment. All it takes is one person you trust to get infected. Here's a good example. Let's say somehow a virus can be placed into a CSS demo file. Would you view a demo from a n00bfest member? A person with AV software has a chance of detecting the file as hostile before it's run, but someone running without AV is SOL. The resources a good AV program uses are minimal. I'm using AVAST and it's taking up less the 50mb RAM. 31 MB of that is the Web Scanner which is optional if you have safe browsing habits or use a combination of firefox and noscript.

I have 4GB of ram, I'm willing to give up <1% of my system resources for the chance to block a virus from someone I trust.

I do have to agree with you though, good computer security practice is the best defense against a virus. But you can't be perfect 24/7. You're human and will eventually make a mistake.

Just out of curiosity when you type msconfig in run how many apps are running in your startup tab?

I got about 25+, most of them are necessary.

I know I can remove some of them, but so far the boot up time is acceptable and I use most of those things.

I have Zero,none of those are necessary.Don't think that they just make you boot slower.If they start with windows then there active apps eating resources.There is not one thing in your list that needs to start with windows.

At a minimum, the logitech app allows me to use all the features of my mouse. I think the audio app helps windows detect if I'm using headphones or builtin speakers or the hi-def digital output and routes the output accordingly. I
haven't try disabling the touchpad or the Nvidia startup entries, and I don't think it'll be a good idea to.

I think you're taking optimizing a windows system too seriously. Windows inherently is a wasteful OS by it's design philosophy. Windows was designed to be a desktop operating system. The user experience has a higher priority then efficiency. If you want to get every single bit of performance out of your machine, use Linux. Linux was designed to be lean and mean. You get to choose what additional UI enhancements you add to it. Windows comes pre-installed with all the bells and whistles.
