Post Wireless Modems
I'm going to have to move my Gaming comp to my bedroom soon, and will have to go wireless. I need to know what the best wireless modem is, in you opinion. I really have little to no knowlege on this subject, so any help would be great.

Thanks

I've never had wireless before...but from what i've been hearing on these modems, wireless SUCKS ass for gaming. Just watch yourself.

I know, but I really have no choice.

And Linksys is out of the question. My last router was a linksys and was a piece of crap. I currently have a netgear router and it works really well my with laptop, but still not well enough to game :(

First of all, you need a wireless router not a wireless modem, and a wireless card for your pc. Make sure it's a G rated router/card with atleast 54mbs+ speed. Your cable/dsl modem can stay wherever in the house it is now.

Peronsally, I prefer D-Link products. You might want to look for one that gives priority to gaming packets (pieces of info sent across the internet). DocWonder might have more info for you.

Linksys's newer stuff is all garbage. Their residential routers are prone to security and operational problems with their poorly designed firmware. Speaking of which, they just released a major security patch for their firmware of many popular models. So, if you own one, you might want to check up on that.

Actually, you don't want to use A cards or devices. They are the least secure, any many newer G routers only support B devices, and not A.

I have all the security settings turned off on my wireless router. Hell, I even have mac filtering turned off. Anyone who wants to connect to my network can.

Anyone know why I do this?

Because everyone in my neighborhood is too old/stupid to connect, and I live on the end of a dead-end street, so it's not like some retard would prowl my neighborhood with a wifi card and a laptop looking to haxor my mass quantitiy of openly shared files (lol NONE).

I'm in the same situation, I live in an apartment building that is full of old people. (They love my drums, I'm sure) Security isn't a huge issue in a town of 2000 either.

for the love of (insert deity here) do not get a linksys. i have been using a linksys for 2 years now and in all online games i play i disconnect from the internet for 10-20 secs occassionally, and especcially often in CS. as you know, this will often result in death with especially sucks when you are the last person on your team left, you hear the enemy approaching, then it all locks up on you and when you are connected back its the start of a new round and you failed your team. i recently ordered a dlink gaming router with gamefuel technology which i should be getting tommorow (cost me $100 at newegg.com) so hopefully that will stop my disconnections. i'll let ya know how it works out.

Using Linksys, never had a problem. Only problems I've had were either caused by Gman or myself.

Since Cisco and Linksys got together (cisco bought linksys out, I think), their quality has improved greatly.

I tried a Cisco card in my laptop and that thing blows too. The company my father works for bought hundreds of them for the employees and nobody uses them because they are such poor quality.

what is my qos? got my new router today. D-Link GamerLounge gaming router. my connection is lost much less often but it still happens during gameplay. tell me whatever i need to do to fix this problem. i've already been through all the update rate, fps rate, and all the other ping type things and they don't seem to affect it.
