Ok, this is actually a true story and yes it comes from Canada of all places. Several years ago a good friend of mine was a working part time for the Air Force training air cadets. While he was there he found out they needed a trained and certified Range Safety Officer from the military in order to keep there competition shooting team going. So he steps up and gets certified.

Now this is the part where I get involved, he quickly learns that the new position is a lot to take on and asks me to help the competition team to train for competitions. Now in order to do this and get some free range time, I have to agree to help with training the new cadets on how to shoot. So I do this, because free range time up here in Canada is hard to come by the DOD was paying for all the ammo and supplies so who gives that up.

So about six months into helping my buddy out shooting twice a week in a indoor range at the bottom of the local police headquaters we get to the night I get a rude awakening. This one cadet who we all hate pulls some strings with the help of his annoying mother to get him extra range time so he can try out for the competition team comes out. So this kid starts to once again to annoy us with stupid questions and then go through stuff he shouldn't, and decides to go through a box that belonged to the ETF (Canadian version of SWAT). He finds several bowling pins, with bullets lodged in them. He asks why they shoot them and we explain to all the cadets that the pin at the back of the range has a similar silhouette of a human and they train to hit the pin to simulate long range training when indoors. We then slap the kid in the head for going through there stuff.

Now I don't know the rules and regulations on American ranges but the police up here have a policy that at anytime you are in the range shooting or not you must be wearing a bullet proof vest. Now since I am standing behind the cadets while they shoot prone I decide to wear the full length vest with the crotch protection. So the night goes on without a hitch, the cadets are fine but it comes to the turn of the cadet we all hate and he goes down to place his target at the back of the range. Now the cadets shoot prone when they first learn because we use WWII 303's modified to shoot .22's but the rifle is still thirteen pounds and for kids it can be hard to hold up for long periods of time. So we also make the cadets have there targets tacked to a cardboard box on the floor of the range so they shoot level to there position.

With that being said, the dumbass cadet decides to sneak a bowling pin down the range in his box. Now for the few who don't know what a bowling pin is made of, these ones had the super hard plastic outer covering with solid wood inside. Now police 9mm have no problem piercing this plastic covering, but low velocity DOD .22's will not. Well the bullet hits the bowling pin, then the wall, then came all the way back to the front of the range. The bullet finally stopped in my bullet proof vest in the center of my chest. No it didn't hurt but the sudden shock of it hitting me almost made me shit my pants. It didn't take us long to figure out what happened and who was responsible and instead of getting the cadets kicked off the range if we reported the incident to the police RSO we kept it quiet and banned the cadet from ever shooting again.

So that's my sad little Canadian story of being shot, lol.

Oh shit CPT! Haha, I'm going shooting this summer with my brother but I didn't know we had to wear vests. I think it's safe to say that they do their job though !!

you dont have to wear vests at everyday ranges, just police ranges.

I've been shot, hit by lightning, in an earthquake big enough to throw me off a bed and a tornado that made our camper hover (it was chained to the ground so we didn't fly away to OZ). I just need a Typhoon, hurricane and a Tsunami to finish the gambit of disasters. I missed Hurricane Andrew by one day when vacationing in Florida so I almost had the hurricane. Now if I can turn my luck of surviving disasters into winning the lottery I would be a very happy man.

I've been whacked with plenty of .22 ricochets. The best way to find out if its safe to shoot at something is to shoot it. Worst one drew blood out of my upper lip, and as you it scared the living shit out of me.

You should have straight degraded the cadet before you banned him.

your very lucky it was in the chest.....6 inches higher and it might have been the throat, face area.....and that would have truly sucked ass.
