This is the only server this happens to me this bad on I constantly get choke of 3-13 (sometimes goes up to 20) and I'm not trying to say its the server crapping out but jeez.... I tried lowering my rates when I play on the main and I get this (or similar) ** NOTE: The real value is 50.000 but the server has temporarily restricted it to 66.000 ** Which makes it impossible to fix my choke. Other servers I play on don't give me this much choke (and the few that do allow me to fix my rates). And before my inet is blamed, I am on a 12/1 mbit connection (granted uTorrent is running in the background, turning it off doesn't help too much... i cap it to 30KB/s up and 400KB/s down when I game) and pingtest.net gives me an A rating with 0% packet loss. Anyone have ideas on what would help? I'm open to port forwarding or other ideas... |

We force updaterate and cmdrate to 66 so players can't set them to get an advantage. Setting updaterate and cmdrate differently generally won't help you fix choke anyway (if your rate is set right). Try changing your rate to something lower, like 25k or even 20k. We don't limit that as strictly. Also, see this thread. And turn off anything else you have running -- even if you cap it. Your router (most likely) has to do NAT for all these packets and will definitely affect your gameplay. Lastly, in your router, you might want to statically forward your client port (I think 27015) for both UDP and TCP to your computer. That way, when the router sees that port number, it doesn't have to do NAT (which modifies the packet and recomputes checksums) and can just forward the packet. If you still have choke, make sure you don't have other computers using up your bandwidth -- sometimes I'll leave another computer on with a torrent program running and it significantly affects choke. If you can't control what other people do, consider a router that has QoS settings -- the WRT54G with the DD-WRT firmware is excellent in that respect IMHO. |

I will note that I have had choke on the current server ever since it went up and it's the only server I ever have choke on. |

Alright, I will turn of torrents next time I go in. Forwarded the port just now. Funny you mention the WRT54G, I have the 54GS with Tomato firmware - I don't use QoS on it because I haven't taken the time to set it up. But mostly nobody in my house does anything bandwidth intensive unless my dad is working on the sites he maintains/develops (and he's hardly ever home when I game). If this doesn't help i'll lower my rate. Thanks. EDIT: Well Jet was saying something about rates to somebody on the server (pretty sure it wasn't me). He typed in rate 30000;.... so I tried that (i had messed with rate and was getting 30 choke - wtf?) and now it's down to below 3 at all times except right after spawn and death. So - works great!
