i've hadthis porblem since i joined n00bfest... my chokegoes nuts on maps usually aztec and italy... i usually wait for a lot of people to die and then play, that helps... but now i seem to be getting a lot of choke on all maps on the elite server, maybe cuz its almost full? idk, but someone told me that has to do with the server not my rig. is this right or is there something i can do at home?

i alrdy change my cl_updaterate 22 on n000bfest servers

Is this happening only on the n00b servers? Have you tried playing on other servers?? Try going to 68.38.222.223:27015 and see if you experience the same problems (it's my box, and has 6 BOTs running around).

I'm with you Vision. I've been having problems for the last 2 months. I've been racking my brain as to what it could be. It has continued to get worse over the last month. I've tried to update everything on my pc, but nothing has helped.

yes its mainly n00bfest i only play on n00bfest servers as long as others are around... the only other server i play on is the A4H 24/7 dust2 server which is a 32 man server which is full friggin 24/7 everyday ... and even when that server is full i have no problem at all with lag, choke, loss or anything...

n00bfest needs a 24/7 dust2 server

Actually Ness, Mine has been at 10 for the last month now. I can't move it, or it becomes unplayable.

Doc is here for the rescue!

Alright newbies, this is how it works... a large part has to do with who is hosting the servers and how they set up the servers.

Funservers claims that it runs its servers on some hi quality equipment... if that's the case then it will be able to deliver whatever you request of it... what that means is this...

cl_updaterate is related to choke
cl_cmdrate more related to loss

cl_updaterate is the number of request your computer makes to the server. Most servers either aren't set up to deliver 100 request per second or simply cannot deliver 100 requst per second for each and every person on the server... therefore putting in the command cl_updaterate 101 usually has no ill effect on your connection or computer. However, if the server is able to output a true 101 request per second , then it will essentially flood your connection and cause choke. Obviously the numbers are all variable depending on your connection, how many people are connected, etc...

To prevent your connection from flooding, you must limit the requests to the server or get a bigger connection.... most of us will have to lower our cl_updaterate.

To find it, just start at 20 and change it up or down till you see no choke.

For those servers that you connect to that allow you to play with a cl_updaterate 101, it just means the server is most likely not sending your 101 updates, but in fact sending you something very much lower than that.

as a side note, choke can also be caused if the server bandwidth sucks... in otherwords, the server may be badass and able to give you 101 requests, but if its connected to a small pipe, things are gonna get choked up and you're gonna see a bottleneck.

To be honest, i personallyt think funservers has a bandwidth bottleneck with some possibly kickass servers. The majority of choke is therefore server side and not client side. My 3mbit connection should certainly be able to handle more than 30 requests per second without choke... but anything above 30 causes choke... which i feel is due to server outgoing bandwidth limitations.

what should cl_cmdrate be at or what is yours at

Yeah Doc, I knew all that, but what's had me confused whas when the transition first happened to funservers, it was great! I had everything turned way up, and NEVER had choke - or that laggy, shaky movement. I guess that's what you have to deal with when it comes to online games. I'm still getting a new comp. though! It sure won't hurt!! :)

I'll tell ya, I think some of this has to do with the netcode of all HL1 based games. I've noticed this:

The main server and the funmaps server are located on the same machine. If the main server has 32 players and the funmaps server has none, there is choke. If the funmaps server has 16 players and the main server has 26 or so (a total of 42 players) they both run fine and smooth.

I'm considering cutting the main server down from 32 players and openinng up some other possibilities. 32 player CZ servers aren't the best performers out there. You can run three 16 player servers on the same machine and they'll run fine. It's just not coded for that kind of throughput.

Smaller servers would kick ass. When I play on the Elite server, I have none of the problems I have when on the Main server.

yea i like small servers, but i do play on a 32 man server which is full 24/7 and i never have problems... i guess its funservers bandwidth :(

Maybe not. Like I said, if you have an uber machine with nothing else on it, it'll probably support 32 players. It's just that HL1 isn't friendly enough to be able to multitask.
