Hey guys, im having problems with my gpu and i honestly dont know an exact cause as to why my fps would go from 150-220 fps to 20-46 fps all in the matter of 5 minutes. I've tried googling things, you know, to see if other people have had the problem and found solutions but i really coudlnt find much. I also checked the gpu temps they werent anything too harsh running in game at like 50C. I had a slight overclock last week about 50Hz higher on the cpu and memory speeds but i changed it back to default the next day. My GPU is the BIOSTAR VA4653NH51 Radeon HD 4650 512MB 128-bit GDDR3. Thanks.

Strangely, I have the same problem from time to time. I'll be running Source at like close to 300fps and then BOOM: my fps drops to like 10 and I have to alt+tab out of the game and then come back in for it to go back to normal. And usually thats only a temporary fix. Sometimes I have to close source and open it again for it to normalize. I'm running a 1 GB Radeon HD 4850.

my first guess is heating, despite what your temps say. clean out cher computer. take it outside & blow compressed air all over it. blow dust from the metal "fins" on your GPU and your CPU. That dust kills heat transfer.

make sure you have enough space in your case for air circulation. A "quick fix" might be to remove some panels from your case (although you get dust all up in thar much faster).

try removing and re-seating all your ram as well. just for giggles. un-install any and all system tray or services that you don't need. could be a memory leak.

Also run a temp monitor for your cpu and gpu so you can isolate the problem get a good one not some windows gadget shit. Also are you running ATI tool to overclock it or anything?

I was using Riva Tuner but i uninstalled it and its at default now but im using GPU-Z to tell my GPU temp and Core Temp for my CPU temp and they are all in the normal temp ranges and i also cleaned out my HAF 932 and gpu last week so i dont know whats going on im going to need a new compressed air can and i just resteated my ram :( but im still getting 20-40 fps

Oh and did i mention its only CSS that im having problems with? i was able to play crysis warhead perfectly fine

Unless you give us your settings there is no way to help you.Maxed out? AA? AF? resolution?Cards do not run slower from hardware failure such as heat issues etc. They simply run or dont.Artifacts mean fried gpu snow means hot memory. But slow performance is software, over zealous settings, too high of a resolution or sucky card.If your running maxed out at a high res then its probably doing all it can.My 4870 at 1980x1020 will just hold a little over 60, that's maxed out no aa.Sometimes drivers can make you drop alot of performance in lieu of better stability so if you find a good set stick with them and always read release notes on drivers.

Sometimes older drivers are better so if it happens again find some old releases and use those.Running aa in a fps online is a no no,and 8x aa on that card?Good bye frames.
