Post subject:  graphics driver is making my computer fail

ok so ive been running windows 7 for about 3 weeks now and last thursday i tried loading CS and it crashed my computer. i restarted it thinking it was no big deal but i got a start-up recovery screen that said windows 7 could not start.

it ended up i had to reinstall windows 7 and go back to the begining. no big deal. BUT now every time i try and install the nivida driver for my computer the same thing happens. windows will not go past the screen with the lil progress bar thingy on it. all i get is a black screen and i have to restore my computer back to before i installed the driver... Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_13

my system still recognizes the card as an nvidia chip, but it just uses" generic vga...whatever" at the type
i can still watch online divx videos and flash and everything still runs fine i just cant get my graphics card to install...

any of you tech junkies have any good ideas?

would you run dxdiag and post the results? That'll give us your system/driver specs, etc.

start > run > dxdiag , then Save All Information

I'm interested in the following sections:

------------------
---------------
Display Devices

Sound Devices
-------------

I've run into probs updating my nvidia drivers under Win7 Ultimate as well, but nothing that req'd a restore.

Falcon,

A couple more pieces of information, if you please.

Who manufactured your GeForce? Is it PNY, etc, etc? (The card should have come in a box with the manufacturer name on it, or the name should be stamped somewhere on the card itself).

Which nForce drivers are you trying to install? (should be some number like 121.42) Where did you get the one you're trying to install, and when?

I had BSODs associated with the nVidia drivers included in Windows 7 on first boot. There was no way to fix it, aside from slipstreaming new drivers into the install and reinstalling. I couldn't even boot into safe mode, because it said "Windows Setup cannot continue in safe mode. Since this is your first time booting, please reboot in normal mode." When I'd reboot, I'd get a BSOD. Googled it, and there are tons of folks having the same and/or similar problems.

So in my experience.. if you've got an nVidia card, Windows 7 is not a feasible option at the moment.

you would have to call HP and ask since i built it on their website and they sent it to me. i cant even take my laptop apart enough to see the card. i dont have the proper tools...

I have dual nVidia 9500's with Win7. The driver that Win7 tries to install in the first set of updates causes a failure for me, but in general things work great.

It was this way with Vista x64 as well.

Downgrading to the much better supported WinXP is definitely an option. But I would suggest that you check a couple things before you go that route:

1) Does HP's support/downloads site have a Win7-approved driver for your specific system's make-up?

2) Does nVidia have a Win7 supported driver for your specific card? You may have to check their "beta driver" area.

I'll check up on this stuff once I get home from work, unless you've made your mind up one way or the other.
