I have no idea what the f*ck just happened to my computer, but I was using it, cleaning up some files before I was going to reformat one of my harddrives, and 30 GB's of files (including ALL of my pictures of my daughter's first three years of her life) were gone... I'm clueless...I have no idea what the hell just happened here. I've noticed wierd things happening in the past few days, though...like my computer just freezing, or applications just freezing (source a couple of times). Oh, and before anyone says, "well, you probably just deleted the wrong things!", no, I did not. When I noticed that everything was gone, I instantly checked the trash bin, and there was nothing out of the ordinary in there that was gone. Any ideas? My wife just broke down because we lost all the pictures of our daughter. Has anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this before?? Oh, and things just seem to exit automatically every now-and-again. I was just sitting here and my IE just exitted when I wasn't even touching it (my firefox got deleted...). I don't want to do anything yet, just incase you just know of some way to get all my pictures and files back, but just incase you can't, all I can do is reformat and reinstall all my windows recovery stuff, or whatever.... |

Check out this link. http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/collec ... files.html Put the hard drive in another computer as a slave drive though. If you install these programs, it may overwrite a portion of the hard drive that the photos are on. Those are supposably free.. and free is good. The 2nd one seems to have gotten the better reviews. |

If you were doing them thru control panel and deleted the wrong thing they wont appear in the trash it just goes away. For your pictures.. Try checking your camera or SD card if they are still inside there and see if you can put them back on your computer... |

All I was doing at the time was moving files around, organizing all the pictures more (I'm anal like that)...next thing I know, everything's gone. I didn't touch anything or delete anything....they were just gone. Along with everything from "My Documents" except for three downloaded CD's. The strangest part is that lots of the programs are still on the harddrive...they're just gone and deleted from the Start Menu. I'm completely clueless as to what happened. All I know is that there's 30GB's of files that are completely gone (12-17GB's of movies, and three years worth of pictures of my daughter). Anothing thing I just thought of that was strange is that lots of Windows files are gone, too. I was going to go restore my computer to a few days ago, and there's nothing in the "System Tools" section of my start menu. Has anyone even heard of anything like this before?? Do you think if I took my computer in somewhere, they might be able to recover any of the pictures or files?? Or is it hopeless and I just need to erase my harddrive and start all over? |

Dude...what the f*ck?! Did I finally piss off the wrong person?! Now...next question: Is it possible for someone to access my computer and all my files? Like hacking into my computer? And if so, is it traceable? |

Officer Doofy gave you the right answer, Joe. And the other question is a slap in the face. It's always possible for someone to access your computer and all your files. Doesn't matter what security you have, there will always be some sort of hole that someone can turn in to a goatse to access your PC. |

Now, if I already have a second harddrive on my computer, would I be able to install those files onto there, and it would still work fine? |

Joe, needless to say always keep you personal info such as photos, tax PDF, word docs, game cfg, backup software etc, all on a seperate external drive. Makes it easy to snatch and run when a hurricane/fire/disaster event comes too. Never use C: for personal info if you can help it. Basically C: should be an OS and application drive only... Most hacking programs usually search and/or corrupt the local C: drive and often use default and/or common folder names for the attack, so always try to make it harder for any virus or attack to happen by placing important info in hard to find folders/drives etc. Never use my documents or documents and settings default folders for anything... Also see my post in the general forum. I thought this was just a myspace hack/attack at first, but it appears they hit you personal system first and got your PW. WD External USB 2.0 500GB drives now 120 at buy.com Also never use the "remember me at login" feature for critical sites like banking, email, paypal or other important sites. Always use multiple levels of secure PWs and only use you highest security PWs on high security sites, and use low security PWs on low security sites (like myspace). This way if a low security site gets hacked and they get your PW, it's not the same PW used for more important sites. Also thier are many free hosting sites you can upload your pictures to so that you can share them with family as well it serves as an offsite backup. Hope this helps and is useful info. If not just say I know and do all this shit already now shutup. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_08 |

Yeah...so I'm doing the "resoration" software that Doofy was talking about. So far it's working. I've gotten lots of the newer pictures restored, but I haven't come across any of the older pictures yet. Looks like I'll be doing this all day. As for all the other files and such, when I get done with all the pictures, I'll just have to reformat the harddrive and start all over, because I'm still missing LOTS of windows files. |

Joe, Let me start off by saying, that last nights performance was, in my opinion very funny. To tell you the truth, I was broadcasting everything in a small ventrilo last night, and everyone seemed to think it was hilarious. Let me say that the accidental deletion of your daughter, Marylin's photo's was an accident. I had been requesting a file transfer while you and your wife were talking. I had typed an incorrect command but, to my surprise, you took it very harshly. I heard you screaming to your wife, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON, THIS SHIT KEEPS HAPPENING, WHAT THE F*CK. By that time, I couldn't sit up. If you recall, your Start menu opened, that was me, falling out of my seat. Now for the good stuff. You did not get infected because someone dislikes you. You were infected trying to download cheats. I hate cheats, and I do play Counter-Strike my self, On occasion. I will not release any information on my self. since it's a CS community, but I will tell you that I targeted you since you were logged into Navysat. Don't trust the guys up there, since it takes more time to exploit the files that remember your passwords for you. Such as the "remember my shit". You had a key logger, I saw every keystroke you had managed to type over the past few weeks. I do have everything, but I don't care for it. Your myspace was fun also, I let my friend take care of that. Did you like the Emo bitch? So did i! The only reason you are recieving this post is due to the following reason: I messed up by deleting your files. Luckily, your C:\documents and settings\Owner.Desktop\My Photos. Are currently sitting in front of me. I really don't want to keep them. So the next time I am in your PC, I will upload them to the same location that they were previously. I will not help you with removing my shit, but a reformat will not work in your situation. I am sorry Joe, but i am against cheaters. If for some reason you were infected from a different file, I may think about it. I will look more into it when I have time. *Proof* Navysat@aol.com Navyman Thanks a bunch, and sorry for the problems. Your friendly, HcK {`PhiberOptik`PaLoX} EpC {`Sculay `Noisey `Chewy} |

Eeek, dont go out to torrentland and try to download a logger, half of them are trojans themselves. You really need some good up to date spyware or knowledge of what is installed and where on your computer so you can watch for anything outa the ordinary, which means you have to know how to unhide/view all files and check your directories regularly. Also monitor your processes to see what's cooking. Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_11 I'm still trying to find out how he could initiate commands remotely through a firewall, like the file download, or sending the logged file (FTP or Email) and if email, would you not see the screens pop up and login when it sends? What if you don't have a SMTP POP setup and only use web mail? or how he got your microphone feed in real time unless you were on Vent yourself? Still investigating... Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_38 |

PaLoX, Thank you for bringing this behavior to our attention. n00bfest does not take CHEATING lightly, and your exposure of Joe has (possibly) done us a great service. Thanks for stopping this activity, and also, thanks for offering to return the photos that Joe has lost because of his mistake(s). That's a generous offer, and I personally appreciate that gesture. Joe is a long standing member of this community, and I would be a bad leader to take action against him without knowing the full extent of his treachery and seeing some proof. Before I request action against him here in the community, could you please share some specifics with me privately about his explorations into the cheating world? You can Private Message me, use AIM (if I'm not AFK as usual) or email me, whichever works better for you. Again, I thank you for your service to this community (and your kindness regarding Joe's failure to backup his data) and I ask you to please give me more information so we can decide how to handle his membership here. |

A little more on how this logger thing works. The little bugger can open/enable remote ports, supports custom folder/directory structure for hiding it really good, it even has invisible windows... Yellow_Flash_Colorz_PDT_20 http://www.reconserver.com/support.php?menu=help |

I had some elaborate thing set up to put on the forums, but you know what? He's not worth it. Simply said: this guy's going to pay for messing with my family like this. I'm completely steamed about this.... EDIT: you know what? f*ck him. Time to download Steam again. |
