Post subject:  Question?

Alright...I got home from work yesterday, and my computer was off. I tried turning it back on, and it came on for a minute and shut off again. Not only did it shut off, though...but it made some kind of strange beeping noise from inside the computer. I think its some kind of power issue from my power supply, but my wife wants a "professional" opinion before I start replacing things. Also, I can turn off the computer and it wont start back up again..but when I get rid of all the power from the Surge Protector and give it a few minutes, that's when I can get power back to it (for a minute atleast). Any thoughts or ideas? Luckily I have my laptop as a back-up still....

for once i cant think of anything witty to go along with the power supply so im a go with that...

any chance it could be a bad power cable?

Might be the cable, too...I really don't know. This one caught me completely off guard....pissed me off, too (cuz I found out my wife pawned my laptop to pay a bill without atleast telling me)

you should have an extra cpu power cable laying around somewhere....if not hit walmart and get one for 8 bucks and test...if it works great, if not return it

The beep means there is a problem.I would start by pulling my network card out and then go from there.Could be a stick of ram went bed so you might want to pull a stick of that out too.Just do one thing at the time and you should be fine.Doesnt sound like power supply though.

you shold also try to start up with everything but the mouse keyboard and monitor plugged in and see if that works and if it does start plugging in things from there and find out what might be crapping out...

you may want to go through the computer and make sure everything is all plugged in and snug a loose connection somewhere may be fuxing with you

By a strange beeping noise was it a series of long and/or short beeps in a pattern? If so post the pattern.

From what I remember, it was just a series of the same beeping, all in a row. No patterns or anything like that....

I just remembered some CMOS's use a single sting of beeps as well. But with it shutting off as soon as you reapplied power could mean a number of things. Disconnect all the internal drives, remove any cards and try starting the system. If you still get nothing remove the memory modules. Note any beeping(# of beeps and or pattern). Also look at the capacitors on the systemboard, if any are leaking or bulged your mainboard is wasted.

Yeah....my wife made me take it in to a "professional" guy. He just got back to us yesterday and said my motherboard was completely fried. So I'm out of commission for awhile until I get enough money to buy some new parts. Thanks for all the help, though...I'll have to keep all this in mind.
