I was telling this story to a coworker yesterday and ended up in tears, because I've never thought of it this way.
OK so for some time after college, I was living in Chicago in a townhouse by myself. After a year or two, my brother graduated from college & roomed with me while he worked his first job as well. My brother's the muscular outgoing guy, and I am not horrible looking, so together we ended up partying with just about any hot 19+ year old girls we ran into. We'd go to applebees on a saturday night and have 3 or 4 of the hotties at my house that night, drinkin & smokin sweet weed. Everything was effortless. I was a 27 year old doing what most 22-thru-60 year old guys WISHED they could do.
Anyway, one 19 year old really pushed my button. She was a hippie chick, looong brown hair, giant brown eyes, perfect bod, "too cool" personality which I was able to get over because of her looks & age. So we hit it off, end up partying quite a bit, heavy petting/makeout sessions GALORE at my townhouse. Her name is way too distinctive to allow anonymity so I'll call her Lisa.
We plan to get together with some other friends and camp out at one of the state parks nearby. SCORE. Me & her in a tent by ourselves, with liquor = inevitable sexy time. I'm a relatively outdoors guy so of course have my own tent. I pack it up along with a 30-pack of condoms (gotta prepare, just in case right?) and the other weekend stuff including a cooler.
So we drive down on a friday afternoon. We get there, it's raining. Shit. Rain & camping = misery, but at least we can get sexy in the tent right? RIGHT? So the others get their tents out and I help them set 'em up. Next it comes time for my tent.
I whip it out.
Lisa takes one look, says "that's it?!", and storms back to the car. What I've whipped out, my friends, is a 2-person backpacking tent. What that really means is, barely enough room for 1 person & their stuff. What I thought was something that would bring us together (that small space! She's got to be right next to me allllll night) was exactly what drove us apart. My tent was too small for her.
Anyway long story short, she completely ignored me the entire weekend. I drank/smoked myself into oblivion out of the misery of lost sex potential, but ended up having fun because I discovered bocce ball while stoned/drunk, and my friends were on my side.
So let that be a story to ye kids, size does matter.
This isnt' the exact tent I have, but it's the same size.
